Flashback more than 2500 years ago, it was Gautama Buddha who realized the sufferings of life and the impermanence of all-that-is, which set him on the path in search for the Truth (Tao) and the solution of ending sufferings. During his journey, he discovered that meditation and asceticism alone were not the answer.
If one seeks to end suffering or misery by attempting to change the environment (or external factors) to sooth his pain; his efforts would be futile! It can be said that man can change the environment to suit his needs, much like turning on the air-conditioning when the weather is hot. It is not applicable to a person who is suffering mentality. Any attempt of ridding the person(s), thing or environment that caused his misery in the first place, would be useless or would at most alleviate the pain momentarily. The pain will resurface when similar person(s), situation or environment arises again and thus the pain 'returns'.
As such, the only way to truly eradicate suffering should be that of a mental level. Change your mind, change your reality! Simple, right? Recently I came to realize that it is easier said than done. After weeks of coughing and visits to the doctor, I finally found out that I had contracted a lung infection which although wasn't life-threatening but nonetheless gave me a chance to rethink how much "wisdom" or truly "enlightened" I thought I was. Even after medication, the nights were "nightmare-ish" as sudden coughing or a swallow of saliva could send me to a frantic cough that seemed very asthmatic while I tried to catch my breath of life. I kept a bottle of warm water to drink handy when such event happened, but it was not always effective. The feeling was as if I had residues of tea-leaves stuck in my dry throat that caused it, but I could not cough out any phlegm much less tea-leaves...haha...fortunately I recovered somewhat.
This episode had shown me that we humans are 'fragile' beings and we can trash our ego into the bin. So what if we are a CEO of a big company or the president, in the face of illness or death, we are but weak twigs. When you are ill, nothing seems to be important anymore. Your aspirations, desires, hatred, jealousy, money, power, status etc can step aside. My self-confidence was quite shaken.
We are trapped in our own illusion and desire. Now is the time to rethink our life and life purpose. You should ask yourself this question, "Is my life just the acronym for "ESSP" (Eat-Sleep-Shit-Procreate)?" I would hope that your answer is "NO", otherwise we would be no better than mere animals who can do ESSP much better than us.
In this fast moving world, we might be at the cross-road, a dilemma or even confused. As a global village, where technology and modern conveniences shortens our distance. But at the same time, we tend to be 'cold' like the technology we use. This blog voices my reflections and thoughts on life. Share your views here and share this blog with your friends.

The Irony of Life 人生的矛盾
Hair?...nothing special. But to many it means different things. "Youth", "Fashion", "Being Cool" etc. You may style any way you want... that is, provided you still got some..ha..ha...
But joke aside. Don't you find it an irony? When you were young, you want to look more mature...be it "lady-like" or "manly". You may be tempted to dye your hair to the trend of the times, or perhaps trim to an 'outrageous-your mum will scream in horror' kind of style? But it really puzzles me that why would any one want to dye their hair white!
What's more ironic is when you get old (older), you would dye it to a more youthful color like black (for Asians) to cover those o-so-ugly whites/greys. But this is understandable. I mean, who wants to look old? (not me?)
This thought reminds me of the "yin-yang" symbol.
It looked like 2 fishes if you may, 'chasing' each other's tail, with each having a little quality of each other (the white dot and the black dot).. It seems too that it is a cycle of birth and death cycle, constantly renewing itself. Much like a parent ages while her child matures from a baby to adulthood.. and the cycle renews again; with the child getting married and having child(ren) of her own.
In life, we do not noticed the passing of time as we are engrossed in our fanatic routine, more "zombie-like" as we are always in automatic mode. We pinned our eyes on our handphone more than on people and things around us; in addition we are conditioned to think of what it means to be "happy". We were conditioned to this frame of mind through many ages (rebirths) of upbringing and the 'norm' that the society sets itself (car, big house, beautiful wife/capable husband, money, power, status...). We do not take time to reflect/meditate/think or rethink about our life (Or are we afraid to take charge of our life and live life as we really want it to be?)
We are chasing the elusive thing called 'happiness' outside of us. But once we got what we want, the 'happiness' is gone again like a fluttering butterfly and once again we are chasing again the next 'new' desire.
"Buddha" when loosely translated means "The Great Enlightened One". He is able to 'see' and understand what is permanent or impermanent, what is eternal and what is transient. The only difference between a Buddha and a layman is that one has awakened to the Truth; while the other is still "dreaming in a dream"... what do you think?

Sand or Stone?
Two friends were walking through a desert and at some point of the journey they had an argument. One friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand "Today my best friend slapped me in the face". They kept walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but her friend saved her. After the friend recovered from the near drowning, she wrote on a stone "Today my best friend saved my life." The friend who had slapped and saved her best friend asked her, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"
The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."
Side thought: Learn to write your hurts in the sand, and to carve your benefits in stone. What is your choice today? Forgiveness or Gratitude? The choice is yours! Face the sun and see the light or turn your back to see only your shadow?

What do you see?
What do you see? A cleaning gauze or something else? Hi friends and fellow Dao-kin, it's been a while since I last posted. Sorry about this, I was pretty caught up with life. While making a trip to my kitchen sink to wash a cup, I chanced upon this curious worn-out cleaning gauze I left last night. I was quick to snap this up with my trusty phone. So.... what do you see? A gauze or a mouse? Side thought: In our transient life, we may have missed out the simplest of beauty. This reminds me of the saying "have eyes that do not see, have ears that do not listen". Very often, we tend to see and hear according to our own pre-conceived notion of what happens around us. We may lack the sensitivity to see and hear from a different angle. This is very true if we consider a scenario of sending a 'good-intentioned' email and getting a ill reaction from the receipient. Thus we should not jump to conclusion as to what the other person's real intentions are. We should probe further before arriving to a conclusion. See deeper, not just skin-deep... look beyond the 'less-than-perfect' surface and discover the inner beauty.

Pte Ltd vs Unlimited
A little boy went to a little store with his mother to buy some grocery. The store-keeper was glad to see such a cute little child and decided to give him some sweets. He opened a can of sweets for the little boy to get a handful of sweets. However, after several invitations, the little boy didn't reach out his hand for the sweets. Thus, the store-keeper on thinking that the little boy was shy; took a generous handful of sweets and put them into the boy's pocket. On reaching home, the boy's mother asked him why he didn't take the sweets from the store-keeper. With a broad grin, the little boy said "My hand is much smaller than the store-keeper's, his hand will fetch more sweets than mine can."
Side thought: How true. Often we would jump at any chance and grab as much as we can. As Tao cultivators, are we 'calculative' in our deeds, every so often jotting down how much we had done or benefited others? If so, there shall not be any true merits in all we had done. Why not learn from the little boy in the story? Do every deed truthfully. Let the hand of God bestow upon us what we deserve. Isn't God's hand bigger than ours? (As Tao-cultivators, we had already received the most precious gifts, didn't we?) What's your opinion?

A Stroll

Amidst the modern city-state
To see old people collecting discarded items such as old newspapers, tin cans, old clothes etc to sell for pennies to earn a 'decent' living in our modern city-state; to some may be unimaginable. Some may feel irksome and lowly that these people actually go through rubbish bins and rubbish chutes to "earn" they daily living. But being old, feeble.. who would employ them? Recently through a new friend who had been working in the health care sector told me a sad but true story...
One day, while walking her rounds, she found a crying old man in a corner. She approached him and asked him what had happened. He told her that he very much wanted to jump off the ledge but he can't. No, it is not fear of death. The truth is, he had no money to pay for his hospital bill... old, half-blind, feeble with a bedridden wife who needs his care to change diapers. Both him and his wife has only TWO 'meals' a day.. which is a tiny bowl of red bean soup which they shared in the morning and kept the other half portion to take as lunch.
Which brings to mind... how fortunate we are, to be alive and able. However 'little' we think we have, it is much more than we imagine. Cherish the people around us, the things we have... and have an open heart and eyes ...to see beyond the superficial. Learn compassion (not hatred), more understanding (not blaming) and reach out your hand (not crossed them in front of your chest). It takes so little to make the world a more bearable place for those down and lost...

When You Thought I Wasn’t Looking
A message every adult should read because children
are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.
are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you hang my
first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you feed a
stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind
to animals.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make my
favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little
things can be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I heard you say a
prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always
talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make a
meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each
other..
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you give of
your time and money to help people who had nothing,
and I learned that those who have something should
give to those who don’t.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you take care
of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have
to take care of what we are given.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw how you
handled your responsibilities, even when you didn’t
feel good, and I learned that I would have to be
responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw tears come
from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things
hurt, but it’s all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw that you
cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I learned most of
life’s lessons that I need to know to be a good and
productive person when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I looked at you and
wanted to say,’Thanks for all the things I saw when
you thought I wasn’t looking.’
This is to all the people who do so much for others, but think that no one ever sees.
Little eyes see a lot.
Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend) influence the life of a child..
Live simply. Love generously.
Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Leave the rest to God

FREE smoke
Smoking......Haze! (PSI: 150 noon, 190, 290.. in the evening) - (19-June 2013)
Can you see the "hazy" HDB at the top of the picture? (20-June 2013)
Thanks to our 'kind' neighbour, all of us in Singapore are 'enjoying' lots of "free" second-hand smoke. I can feel the burnt smell and the choking haze got my eyes dry and lungs heavy. You can see many people with masks over their noses and mouths... a scene uncommon on our sunny island. This haze is robbing the very air we are breath... Oh, rain, rain please come again... Jack really needs you to come out and play..

Have you done your BEST?

Giving and Receiving
Which end would you like to be? The giving end or the receiving end? Well to most, if you are talking about receiving something good, all of us would gladly be at the receiving end. On the contrary, if you are talking about at the receiving end of a punch? No..... siry!
A story told : Once there were 2 ghosts awaiting their turn for rebirth (reincarnation) to a new life. Both were given 2 choices : (1) to be born as a person who constantly receives OR (2) to be born as a person who is constantly giving.
Ghost A was quick to jump the gun and requested to be born as a person who constantly receives. He was a lazy ghost and wanted an effortless life. Ghost B on the contrary, gladly accepts to be born as a person who is constantly giving...
Both were cast into their new lives... Ghost A turned into a begger (constantly receives from the rich), while Ghost B turned into a rich man (constantly giving alms to the poor).
So... what's your choice?
What goes around, comes around" much like a boomerang. You are what you think. So be careful what you think!

Seeing things from different angle
Our perspective on things in most cases are 'one-sided'. Do you see 2 trees on a tiny island, a big fish and a man in a boat..or
